The cost of the inbound logistics for the finished car can be as much as 10% of the total cost of the car. In comparison, the actual assembly costs of a car are only 5%. Moreover, build-to-order concepts, increased model mixes and reduced inventory refer to the increase of the supply chain complexity. This explains the focus of the automotive original equipment manufacturers’ (OEMs) on continuous efficiency and control improvements in their supply chains, whereas at the same time they try to reduce costs and improve the quality of products.
